...luck. Someone just threw away an entire meal. Whoever it was hardly touched it, and it still smelled fresh. As a homeless woman, this was a sight to behold. She hadn't eaten since last night, and that was only a piece of bread.
Patricia grabbed the meal and walked back inside the church building she called home. She sat down and took a bite when she discovered...

two hundred dollars in small change inside the bag that held the meal box. How could someone simple toss money away? She wondered and started to laugh. "Well that's their loss and my gain." Quickly she stuffed the money into her tattered shoes and took off as fast as her bruised legs would let her.

She knew where she was going. It was the place she always went whenever she had a little money. A place she should be avoiding, but she just couldn't help herself. It was the kind of place that...

Her friends hung out, under the bridge. There she could bargain her way out of anything she needed; and right now she needed shoes and a warm blanket.

She spotted her good friend Manuel who always had a stash of the more essential items for living on the streets. She bought a couple flush blankets and a nice looking pair of shoes for $20, and then walked down the street to buy a $3.00 hot dog. It was the best hot dog ever.
She put on her new shoes and made it back to her area of the church building to put her new blankets away. She still had more money than she knew what to do with. She hasn't had more than $10 on her in years, and wanted to spend it wisely.
Suddenly it dawned on her. She knew exactly what she had to do...

She remembered hearing something one Sunday morning from the Pastor of the church. He was talking about tithing and giving a portion of your money to God.
Patricia always felt like God wasn't listening to her because she didn't have any money to give Him. Maybe He'll hear my prayers now, she thought as she put some of her money in the tithe box.
Just as she was putting the money in, a church maintenance man came around the corner and started to yell, "HEY...YOU...What are you doing?" He was running towards her and Patricia was all confused. Did she do something wrong? Was only certain people allowed to "tithe" as the preacher talked about? She didn't wait to find out. The man was coming faster and faster towards her, so she dropped her money in the tithe box and took off. She got as far as the door when suddenly, ....

...she was tackled to the ground. The maintenance man helped her to her feet while holding onto her demanding an explanation. He asked her, "the money in that box is meant for God. It's not for you to just take."
"I wasn't taking money," she explained. "I was titheing."
The man laughed and said, "the box is for cash. What were you planning to tithe with?"
"Cash," she answered. "I found some money in a trashcan the other day. I know that God led me to that money, so I was honoring him by giving some of it to Him."
The man apologized, and the two started talking. It turns out he used be a linebacker in college, but hadn't made a tackle like that in years. He also used to be a preacher's son, and he was compelled to find out if she was saved by asking...

"So, do you know Jesus as your personal savior?"
Patricia stopped and looked at the big man standing next to her. How should she answer that? Personal Savior? She was confused.
"I - um...I - I guess so," she stammered. Joe started talking to her about her sins and her need for a savior. She was intrigued by this man, Jesus that her new friend was telling her about. Especially when he started mentioning something about the poor...
